Often times, music students are intimidated by musical notation. The same is true for students who struggle with textual literacy. Students can become so entangled with sounding out words or notation, that they become unable to listen, comprehend, and make personal meaning from the sounds that result. In presenting graphic notation scores, we can help remove the barriers that students may associate with reading. By seeing that text and graphics are tools to help us understand something, students can realize the importance of how and why we need to be great readers.
