Contemporary music group Wooden Cities helps students better understand classical music of today and the past by identifying with the people who made it and the times in which they lived.

Wooden Cities is a collective of performers and composers who identify with a tradition of western classical music, but challenge audiences’ understanding of it by presenting modern music. In this program, students will be asked the questions “What is classical music? Who made it? and why is it at all important to me?” By meeting modern composers, hearing their music, and relating to the artists of today and yesterday through guided research, students will gain a critical nature of their perceptions of what certain music is or is not, while learning about themselves through this music.
