Gerald Mead is an award-winning visual artist. His workshops expose students to collage and other artforms, using found objects and 3D to make art come alive. He is passionate about teaching, making, and collecting art.

Mead’s artwork is in the collections of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and the International Museum of Photography and Film, among others. He holds an MFA in visual studies from the University at Buffalo, a BS in design, and a BA in psychology, both from Buffalo State College. He has shown his small-scale collages/assemblages in museums and galleries throughout the US and in Europe. Mead is the recipient of many awards and grants from the New York Foundation for the Arts and the New York State Council on the Arts, amongst other organizations. Mead was an educator at the Burchfield-Penney Art Center for 18 years, and he currently teaches at Buffalo State College.

Gerald Mead Residency

Visual Artist Gerald Mead's work consists of small scale collage/ assemblages that incorporate photographic images and found objects which inspire the viewer to look carefully at what he has collected and connected. He has been exhibiting his work for over 15 years.

This multi-session residency explores the key elements of Mead's work: collage, assemblage and portfolio development. Students will work closely with the artist as he instructs them on a variety of techniques, inspires them with his own creations and encourages them in creative self expression.

Collecting

A fun and fascinating discussion of the art of collecting. Why do people collect? How are collections assembled? The artist discusses the range of possible collections, from stickers to fine antiques. He will also share his own extensive collection of WNY artwork and encourage students to show their collections.

Mail Art

Collage artist Gerald Mead leads students in creating beautiful and interesting collage postcards, which are then mailed. Receiving the postcard through the mail, bedecked with additional stamps and postmarks, students learn about interactive art, which engages the outside world in the creative process. In this sense, students collaborate with the United States Postal Service on an artwork.

Art of Collage

Collage is a fascinating technique for transforming images, colored and textured materials and other personal mementos into works of art. This workshop begins with an overview of international and regional collage, and instruction on several collage techniques that Gerald has perfected. Students then create their own autobiographical artworks from their collected materials.
