Afro-Brazilian Dance and Music

Clyde Alafiju Morgan, a native of Cincinnati, OH, is an associate professor at SUNY Brockport. He is also artistic director of the university' s Sankofa African Drum and Dance Ensemble. Sankofa has raised the standard for international relations and interactions on college campuses, both because of its contributing artists and students, and its outreach initiatives.

After early training at the Karamu House Theater, Morgan graduated from Cleveland State University. He did post-graduate study at Bennington College, then debuted with the José Limon Dance company in NYC.

Morgan' s professional studies include Merce Cunningham, Robert Joffrey, and the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo Studios. He appeared with the companies of Babatunde Olatunji, Sophie Maslow, and Anna Sokolow. With his New York duo partner, Carla Maxwell, he toured Africa, performing and conducting research in African music and dance.

After years dancing in New York City, he became the artistic director of the Grupo de Danca Contemporanea da Universidade Federal Da Bahia in Salvador, Brazil. He then taught at the University of Wisconsin, at Madison and Milwaukee.

Morgan has grants from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Program. He was the first artist to be selected as Young Audience Inc. "Artist of the Year," and he has been affiliated with their chapters nationwide.
